Introductions to MDF Board:

MDF board means medium-density fibreboard, it is a type of particle board which is made of small particles of wood. MDF is an engineered wood product, formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres. It is often in a defibrator combined with wax and resin binder. Denser than plywood, it is made by applying high temperature and heavy pressure to forming panels. MDF is from separated fibres, but not wood veneers. It can be used as a building material like plywood, but stronger and much more denser than normal particle board.

The name of MDF derives from the distinction in densities of fiberboard. Large volumme production of MDF began in 1980s. Normally the density of MDF is about 700kg/m3 – 850kg/m3. Compared to natural woods, MDF does not contain knots or rings, is much more uniformer than natural woods during cutting and other treating processes. Certainly, MDF is not entirely isotropic since the fibers are pressed together primarily through the sheet. MDF may be split when woodscrews are installed without pilot holes, and it may be glued, doweled or laminated. Typical fasteners are T-nuts and pan-head machine screws.

MDF is very flexible to treat because it is made of lots of little bits of sawdust stuck together. Hack saw is recommended to cut and long strokes for filling. MDF is also available for CNC machines and vertical mills. When MDF is cut, there are a large quantity of dust particles released into the air, so it is very important that a respirator should be worn, and the working should be processed in a controlled and ventilated environment. It is a good practice to seal exposed edges to limit the emissions from the binders contained in this material. Formaldehyde resins are commonly used to bind MDF, and the test has consistently revealed that MDF products emit urea-formaldehyde. Urea-formaldehyde is always being slowly released from the surface of MDF. When painting it is a good idea to coat whole surface in order to seal in urea-formaldehyde. Wax and oil finishes may be used but they are less effective. Whether these chronic emissions of formaldehyde reach harmful levels in real-world environments is not yet fully determined.
